About Us
Founded in 1956, the Wales Trekking and Riding Association (WTRA) has been at the heart of horse riding in Wales for nearly 70 years. We’re proud to be the longest-running independent organisation of our kind, representing the highest standards in trekking, riding and equestrian tourism across Wales.
Our Story
WTRA was created by a group of passionate riders & Centre owners who wanted to make horse riding in Wales safe, enjoyable and accessible to all. Over the decades, we’ve grown into a respected body that supports both riders and operators, helping to preserve Wales’s rich equestrian heritage and promote responsible riding in its stunning landscapes.
We were the first organisation in the UK to produce an Operators’ Manual, setting the benchmark for safety, quality and animal welfare. That same commitment continues today through regular inspections and strict membership standards, ensuring every approved riding centre offers exceptional care for both riders and horses.
What We Stand For
At WTRA, our mission is simple:
-
To ensure safe, high-quality horse riding experiences for beginners and experienced riders alike.
-
To uphold the well-being of horses and ponies through responsible management and welfare standards.
-
To support and promote riding centres across Wales, helping the industry thrive.
All member centres are inspected and approved, giving visitors confidence that they are choosing a trusted, professional operator.
